OnLive Gameplay FAQ

PC FAQ
Can I use a gamepad with OnLive?

Yes, OnLive currently supports any Xbox 360-compatible gamepads that bear the Windows logo. Note that you must install the latest Microsoft Xbox-360 gamepad driver at http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/download/download.aspx?category=Gaming&type=Gaming with Internet Explorer for the gamepad to work with OnLive. The default driver that installs automatically with Xbox 360-compatible gamepads will not work with OnLive.

When using multiple gamepads, the first gamepad controls OnLive navigation, and additional gamepads can be used with games that support multiple players.

Supported gamepads:

  • Microsoft® Xbox 360® Controller for Windows
  • Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows (requires the Microsoft Wireless Gaming Receiver)
  • Logitech® ChillStream™
  • Saitek® P3200 Rumble Pad
  • Mad Catz® GamePad

OnLive does not support USB DirectInput controllers (pre-2002).

Can I plug my Xbox 360 Wireless Controller in to my PC using my charging cable?

If the cable you're using can be detached, you're likely using the Xbox 360 Play & Charge Kit cable which only charges... it does not transmit data. If you'd like to use your Xbox 360 Wireless Controller with a Windows PC you'll need the Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver for Windows.

Why isn’t my gamepad working? I got a message that my gamepad isn’t supported or needs new drivers. The buttons on the gamepad are not working as expected.

To use your gamepad, first check that you have the latest driver for your gamepad from Microsoft. Use Internet Explorer to download and install the driver from http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/download/download.aspx?category=Gaming&type=Gaming. Then plug in the gamepad and launch the OnLive Game Service. The default driver that installs with these gamepads will not work with OnLive.

Your gamepad is working properly if you see gamepad icons as navigation controls on the bottom of the OnLive Game Service navigation screens. If not, your gamepad may not be supported, or the Microsoft gamepad driver might not be installed correctly.

When I plugged in my gamepad during a game, the gamepad doesn't work. Why not?

Although you can plug in a gamepad at any time when navigating OnLive screens, some games won't accept a gamepad insertion mid-game, and must have the gamepad plugged in before the game is started. Exit the game, and make sure the gamepad is plugged in before restarting the game.

I'm having trouble with the mouse/keyboard.

If you're using a wireless keyboard or mouse that is not functioning as expected, try a wired setup. Bluetooth and other wireless mice and keyboards typically work, but often will add additional latency (lag) to gameplay. Contact Customer Service at support@onlive.com if you continue to experience problems.

How do I set Full screen vs. Windowed mode?

Press Alt+Enter to make the OnLive window resizable. To go back to full screen, press Alt+Enter again.

How can I release the mouse? (How can I use the mouse outside of the OnLive Game Service window?)

To "release" the mouse, click Alt+O to open the Dashboard, and you can move the mouse cursor out of the OnLive Game Service. Most games will "capture" the mouse when you move the mouse back into the game.

The Alt+O key combination toggles the Dashboard open and closed which will also often pause a game. If you want to "release" the mouse without pausing a game, press Alt-Tab, and then click the cursor in another window. Click the cursor back in the OnLive window to again "capture" the mouse.

Mac FAQ
Can I use a gamepad with my Mac and the OnLive Game Service?

Yes, OnLive currently supports any Xbox 360-compatible gamepads that bear the Windows logo. When using multiple gamepads, the first game pad controls OnLive navigation, and additional gamepads can be used with games that support multiple players.

Supported gamepads:

  • Microsoft® Xbox 360® Controller for Windows
  • Microsoft Xbox 360 Wireless Controller for Windows (requires the Microsoft Wireless Gaming Receiver)
  • Logitech® ChillStream™
  • Saitek® P3200 Rumble Pad
  • Mad Catz® GamePad

These gamepads require no extra software and should work with the OnLive Game Service when they are plugged into your Mac. Some third-party drivers have been found to interfere with the OnLive Game Service. If you are using such a driver and find that your controller does not function properly, remove this driver and restart your computer so that the OnLive Game Service can recognize the controller without the third-party driver interfering. OnLive does not support USB DirectInput controllers (pre-2002).

What mouse should I use with OnLive?

Note that some games require a right-click capability and use a scroll wheel, and so we recommend a 2-button mouse with a scroll wheel and a USB interface. Other mouse controllers are not supported at this time.

Bluetooth and other wireless mice (and keyboards) may work, but often will add additional latency (lag) to gameplay.

How do I make the OnLive window smaller than full screen? How do I set Full screen vs. Windowed mode?

Press Cmd+F to make the window resizable. To go back to full screen, press Cmd+F again.

If you want to "release" the mouse without pausing a game, press the Shift+Cmd+M key combination to release the mouse (without opening the Dashboard). Click the cursor back in the OnLive window to again "capture" the mouse.

Does OnLive support mouse controllers with a 4th and 5th button?

While multi-button mouse controllers connected to a Mac often will work with the OnLive Game Service, we do not support the 4th and 5th buttons, and they are not yet assignable in OnLive games.

Why does pressing button 2 perform the same action as button 1?

This is controlled by OS X. To change this behavior, from the Apple menu, select System Preferences, then select Mouse. Check that the left mouse button is set to Primary Button and the right mouse button is set to Secondary Button. Go to System Preferences, then Exposé and Spaces, and check that Dashboard Hide and Show is NOT set to Secondary Mouse Button or Mouse Button 3.

Why does pressing the center button bring up the OS X Dashboard?

This is controlled by OS X. To change this behavior, from the Apple menu, select System Preferences, then select Mouse. Select the center button and set to Button 3. Go to System Preferences, then Exposé and Spaces, and check that Dashboard Hide and Show is NOT set to Secondary Mouse Button or Mouse Button 3.

How do I use my function keys? (F1 - F12)

By default, these keys are set for OS X functionality. Screen dimming, volume control, etc. Pressing the FN key + a function key will allow its standard function ability. To change this default behavior, from the Apple menu, select System Preferences, then Keyboard & Mouse then select the Keyboard tab. Enable the option Use all F1, F2 etc. keys as standard function keys. The function keys will now work with the OnLive Game Service without pressing FN at the same time; pressing FN + a function key will still provide OS X functionality.
